Rick, I could use your opinion here. I am Trying to do the Right thing and change the water pump impeller on my 1994 alpha one outdrive ( s/n O218399 )before it fails and leaves us stranded.
I have removed the bolts holding the lower unit on ( including the hidden ones ) and I have seperated the two sections to remove the lower unit.
Here is the part that I have never seen before. When the lower unit began to drop, the oil from the upper unit began to leak from the bottom of the upper case from where the drive shaft passes through what apears to be two o rings that are just inside the opening that the shaft passes through and once the shaft was no longer plugging the opening the rest of the upper gear lube poured out of the opening.
My question is: Are these two o rings what seals this area or are they there to keep water away from the real seal that is further up on the shaft ( possibly on the other side of the splined coupling) I am trying to determine if this normal or this drive, or if I have a damaged seal.
I tried to view a exploded view in the shop manual that I have, but it is a poor view. And lastly, the oil was black and stinky like gear lube always is with no indication of water in it.....................Thanks in advance,,, DENNIS
